Matthew is a Litigation Lawyer at Valent Legal, joining the firm after many years of varied practice. Before coming to Valent, he worked primarily as a criminal defense lawyer and in Aboriginal Law, and later spent time as a litigation lawyer for the Attorney General of Nova Scotia. Born in St. John’s, NL, he received a Bachelor of Arts in 2007, a Bachelor of Education with a Diploma in Technology Education in 2009, and a Juris Doctor in 2017.
Prior to entering the legal profession, Matthew worked in a QMJHL front office and spent time as a high school teacher. He was also a mixed martial arts columnist for Turner Sports, and saw his work appear on major online publications such as Bleacher Report, CNN, and the Los Angeles Times. He is known for his personable approach, and his broad experience and perspective allow him to handle complex and challenging matters while providing comfort and stability to
clients of any background.
When not in the office or the courtroom, Matthew devotes time to the Nova Scotian sports community. He now sits on the Nova Scotia Combat Sports Authority as Chair of Promotor Licensing for boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts, and is also the General Manager of the Antigonish Senior Bulldogs of the Nova Scotia Hockey League, where he was named the inaugural General Manager of the Year following the 2025-26 season.
