Addressing Halifax and Dartmouth's Housing and Addiction Challenges
Halifax and Dartmouth, like many communities across Canada, face significant challenges related to addiction and housing insecurity. These interconnected issues affect individuals, families, and the broader community fabric. While these are complex problems, organizations like the Freedom Foundation are doing essential work on the front lines by providing safe housing, structured support, and a pathway to lasting recovery.
Who is the Freedom Foundation?
Since 1988, the Freedom Foundation of Nova Scotia has been dedicated to providing services that foster recovery from addictions, including alcohol, drugs, and gambling, while helping individuals develop a positive self-image and self-worth in a secure, caring environment.
Their comprehensive program serves men aged 19 and over who have achieved at least seven days of sobriety and are committed to long-term recovery. Through their four-phase program, residents receive:
- Basic life skills training and support with securing proper identification and medical care
- Structured recovery programs, including 12-step meetings and professional counseling
- Employment support with resume writing, GED preparation, and job search assistance
- Transitional housing through their independent living phase
Since opening its doors, the Freedom Foundation has successfully housed over 1,040 men, with a success rate exceeding 25% for residents who complete all phases of the program. The testimonials from former residents speak to the transformative impact: men who have rebuilt their lives, reconnected with family, and found stable employment and housing.
